Perthshire Paperweights for Sale

Perthshire is a small company in Crieff, Scotland that was devoted to the creation of quality glass paperweights.  They stopped production in January 2002 after more than 30 years of production.  Their paperweights were consistently high in quality and yet remained reasonable in price.

The birth of Scottish paperweight making is credited to the glass making family of Salvador Ysart, who moved to Crieff, Scotland in 1922.  They worked first at John Moncrieff Ltd and made the earliest Scottish paperweights during that period.  In 1946 Salvadore and his sons Augustine and Vincent founded Ysart Brothers Glass and produced glass wares under the Vasart label.  The company name was later changed to Vasart Glass.

Stuart Drysdale was hired manage the business side of the enterprise in 1960.  The company evolved into a new company Strathearn owned by Teachers Whiskey.  In 1967 Drysdale was sent a magazine article on antique paperweights (Woman's Day, July 1965).  The inspired him to try to produce weights comparable to the French antiques.  With this goal in mind, he and several of the glass workers left Strathearn to found Perthshire in 1968.

Peter McDougall was one of the very young glass workers who left Strathearn in 1969.  When Perthshire closed in 2002 he was the head craftsman of  Perthshire.  Peter now has his own studio PMcD Glass Studio and makes paperweights under his own name.  For a selection of Peter's paperweights, see my PMcD page.

There are more Scottish paperweights and related objects on my page of Scottish Paperweights.

For more information, you can read about the Perthshire in three books:

And of course you might want to look at the Woman's Day article that inspired Stuart Drysdale to found Perthshire.  For these and other great references on paperweights, check out my list of paperweight books for sale.

2701 Perthshire Annual Edition 1979E Limited Edition Seal Paperweight. circa 1979.  This magnum sized paperweight features a performing circus seal perched on a red and white spiral striped stand and balancing a red and white striped ball on its nose.  This is one of a series of hollow weights each with a different animal.  The paperweight has a translucent ruby flash overlay and is faceted with one large top facet and 16 side facets.  It is signed with a "P" signature cane on the base of the seal's stand.  It comes with its original certificate identifying this as #213 out of a limited edition of 400 weights.  Only 275 were actually made in the series, making this one of the rarer paperweights.

The hollow weights like this are one of the favorites of collectors since they are so difficult to make.  This one in particular is a joy to examine.  Take a look at the close-up picture to see the detail with the seal wrapping his limbs around the stand for balance as he maneuvers the ball.

Perthshire made this paperweight as one of their annual collection items.  This means the design was made only that one year and never again.

Magnum Size:  3 7/16" diameter by 2 3/4" high.
Signature: Signed with a Perthshire "P" on the base.  With a worn paper label.  The previous owner wrote on the label.  This paperweight comes with the original certificate as shown  in this link.
Condition:  Outstanding condition with no cracks, chips, or scratches.
Execution: Perfect execution.

This PP5 pattern is not one of the patterns documented in the Complete Guide to Perthshire Paperweights, but I believe it to be a PP5.

Size:  2 1/2" diameter by 1 3/4" high.
Signature: Signed in the center of the design with a Perthshire "P" cane.  It also has a paper label "PERTHSHIRE PAPERWEIGHTS CRIEFF SCOTLAND".

Perthshire PP20 Medium Millefiori Swirl Paperweight.  circa 1971-1975.  This is a medium swirl weight is hard to find.  It was made only for five years, from 1971 to 1975.  The design has a complex center cane and multicolored spiral threads extending outward and wrapped around to the bottom.  It has a clear ground and a flat polished base.   The view of the bottom shows how the spiral threads wrap around to the base.

Note:  Some literature refer to the strands as seaweed and calls this and the larger PP21 a Seaweed weight rather than a Swirl weight.

Size:  2 1/2" diameter by 1 3/4" high.  The base is polished flat.
Signature: Unsigned, but I guarantee that this is an authentic Perthshire PP20 paperweight from 1971-1975.
Condition:  Excellent condition with no cracks or chips.  I could find no scratches other than those from wear on the base.
Execution: Very good execution.  This is a difficult design to make.  There are bubbles in the glass.

Perthshire PP226 Miniature Limited Edition Faceted Millefiori Paperweight. This paperweight is an exquisite smaller weight that really sparkles from Perthshire's last full year of production.  It features two rings of complex millefiori cane clusters surrounding a central green floral cane set on a translucent blue ground.  The outer ring of blue and white complex canes has additional pink millefiori canes set in between each complex cane, as if to form a third ring.  The paperweight has a large top facet, five side facets, and a convex polished base.  This is number 140 in a limited edition of 350 weights. It is signed and dated "P 2001" in a millefiori cane on the bottom.  It is also has the number 140 engraved on the bottom and a paper label "PERTHSHIRE PAPERWEIGHTS CRIEFF SCOTLAND".  It comes with a certificate from Perthshire and its original satin lined box.

Perthshire PP90 Medium Millefiori Paperweight. circa 1987-1988.  This hard to find paperweight consists of a large complex central cane cluster surrounded by five smaller complex cane clusters over a dark blue, almost black, ground.  It is signed with the Perthshire "P" in the center.   A very showy weight.

Because the PP90 design was made only in 1987 and 1988, it is a relatively difficult design to find.  Each cane cluster looks like it could have been made of separate canes, but the standard reference on Perthshire states that these are complex canes.

Size:  2 1/2" diameter by just over 1 3/4" high.
Signature: Signed with a Perthshire "P" in the center.  There is no paper label.  Circa 1987-1988.
Condition:  Excellent condition with no cracks or chips.  I did not find any scratches when inspecting this, other than on the base where it is appropriate.  The base is concave.
Execution: Perfect execution.

Perthshire PP14 Limited Edition Faceted Millefiori Paperweight. This paperweight consists of five pink complex millefiori cane clusters surrounding a central yellow cane cluster set on a clear ground.  It has a large top facet, five side facets, and a flat, polished, star-cut base.  The central cluster contains the letter B for 1970.  There is also has a worn but legible paper label "PERTHSHIRE PAPERWEIGHTS CRIEFF SCOTLAND".

The PP14 was made in a limited edition each year from 1969 to 1994.  The 1969 edition was signed with an "A", 1970 was signed with a "B", and so forth.  This is the only series that Perthshire made in a complete series from A to Z.

Size:  2 1/2" diameter by 1 1/2" high.  Very good condition with no chips or cracks.  Some wear on the base.  Signed with a "B" for the year 1970 and also a  paper label "PERTHSHIRE PAPERWEIGHTS CRIEFF SCOTLAND".   The paperweight comes with the original hexagon shaped box made for this series, as shown in this link.

Perthshire Annual Edition 1972C Miniature Flower.  This paperweight features a red lampwork flower with a green stem and two leaves in a stave basket of blue and white floret canes each with a red center.  The Perthshire "P" signature cane is in the center of the flower.  This design was Perthshire's first use of a stave basket in a paperweight.  It comes with its original box and certificate identifying this as #602 out of a limited edition of 1000.

This was a difficult paperweight to photograph.  The stave basket in the background makes the pictures look dark, but the actual glass is clear and this little paperweight is a miniature jewel.

Perthshire made this paperweight as one of their first annual collection items.  This means the design was made only that one year and never again.  They made a crown weight as the annual collection item for 1969.  In 1970, they made a dragonfly paperweight and a flash overlay millefiori weight.  There were four annual collection weights for 1971 and only three annual collection weights for 1972.  An identical paperweight sold for $432 in Selman's Spring 2009 Auction.

Size:  2" diameter by just over 1 9/16" high.
Signature: Signed with a Perthshire "P" in the center.  There is no paper label.  This paperweight comes with the original certificate as shown in the pictures below.

Perthshire called this a pressed weight because a mold is used to form the outside ribbing.  The top is flattened.  There are several different molded paperweights made by Perthshire.  This style is more flashy and slightly larger than the less expensive PP75.

Size: 1 15/16" diameter by 1 1/4" high. Outstanding condition with no scratches, chips or cracks.  Shipment will include a Perthshire millefiori sampler box (see below).

Early Perthshire PP22 Concentric Scent Bottle.  Circa 1973-1982.  Early Perthshire scent bottle with a concentric design five rings of millefiori around a central P signature cane.  The design is placed over a cobalt blue.  The five ring design was made from 1983 to 1986.  Warm colors and perfect execution.

The outer ring of millefiori is hidden by the curvature of the bottle and is difficult to see although it does show up in the pictures.  The standard reference on Perthshire states that bottles made in this early period have only four rings, so this may be an exception.  I am confident that this is an earlier period bottle.

Size:  Just under 5 7/8” tall by 2 7/8” diameter.  The bottle by itself is 3 1/16” tall by 2 7/8” diameter.  The stopper is 3 1/2” long by 7/8” diameter.
Condition:  The bottle has no scratches, chips or cracks.  The stopper does, however, have an internal chip to the bottom of the stopper as shown in the last picture.  No other flaws.  Overall, the bottle and stopper are in very good condition.
Signature:  Signed with a Perthshire P cane in the center of the design.  No paper label.
Execution:  Perfect execution.
