St. Louis Paperweights for Sale

Cristalleries de Saint Louis was founded in 1767 in Lorraine, which became part of France in 1766.  The region was already home to several glassworks.  Paperweight production started at St. Louis in 1845 and most likely continued until about 1860.

Although the modern production of paperweights started in 1952, the output of millefiori and lampwork paperweights was small.  Fewer than 400 lampwork and millefiori paperweights were made between 1952 and 1955.  They were not all signed or dated.  The most successful product of this early revival period was the Queen Elizabeth sulphide which was made to commemorate her coronation in 1953.

After 1955, no additional weights were made at St. Louis until 1965.  In 1965 the factory resumed production of lampwork and millefiori paperweights and then in 1967 they began a series of sulphide weights.  Finally, in 1970 they started producing annual limited edition paperweights.

Antique St. Louis Concentric Millefiori Paperweight.   Circa 1845-1860.  This is a medium St. Louis concentric millefiori paperweight.  It is made up of wonderful complex millefiori canes.  The outer ring has complex canes alternating between green and pink.  The inner ring consists of larger blue and white complex canes around a perfect green, blue, and white central cane.  All of this is set over an upset muslim ground.

If you are wondering how to tell an antique St. Louis concentric from a Baccarat concentric, here is a trick that another collector once taught me.  St. Louis weights tend to be bold in the color setup with the outer garland alternating between two colors, while the garland in a comparable Baccarat weight will alternate between a colored cane and white a white cane.

Size:  2 1/3" diameter by 1 1/2" high.
Signature: Unsigned, but I guarantee this to be an authentic St. Louis antique paperweight. Circa 1845-1860.
Condition:  Very good condition with no cracks or chips.  There are, however, a number of surface scratches which are consistent with the age of the paperweight.  The bottom is ground slightly concave and has appropriate wear.
Execution: Very good execution although there are a few misplaced canes in the outer ring..

2061 Antique St. Louis Scramble Paperweight Doorknob.   Circa 1845-1860.  This is a St. Louis millefiori scramble paperweight doorknob.  Although it was made to be a doorknob, it does not have the hardware fittings and probably never did.  The scramble is packed with complex millefiori and multi-colored twist canes.  This is a wonderful paperweight.

Although many people collect scramble paperweights for their own merit, scrambles are also valuable tools for learning to identify the different colors and canes used by each factory.

Size:  2 1/3" diameter by 2 1/8" high.  The base has a diameter of 1 1/2".
Signature: Unsigned, but I guarantee this to be an authentic St. Louis antique paperweight. Circa 1845-1860.
Condition:  Excellent good condition with no cracks or chips.  The dome was professionally restored to remove some surface scratches.  The bottom is ground flat and has appropriate wear.

2176 Modern St. Louis 1789-1989 Bicentenary Swirl Crown Paperweight.   Circa 1989.  This is a modern St. Louis swirl crown paperweight commemorating the 200th anniversary of start of the French revolution in 1789.  There are four strands of red white and blue cane topped with a red white and blue complex cane with the date 1789-1989.  The bottom is marked on the bottom in gold leaf lettering "BICENTENAIRE DE LA REVOLUTION A.C. Delco Saint Louis”.

This paperweight is part of a special limited edition series of 400 paperweights issued by St. Louis in 1989.  The normal collector series was marked "BICENTENAIRE DE LA REVOLUTION  Saint-Louis”, without the reference to AC Delco, an electronics manufacturer.  I have not been able to determine whether the weights marked AC Delco are part of the series of 400 or a special commission in addition to the normal run of 400.

Size:  2 2/3" diameter by just under 2" high. The bottom is ground concave.
Signature: Signed Saint-Louis in gold leaf lettering on the bottom.
Condition:  Excellent condition with no no cracks or chips.  When inspecting this weight, I could find only one tiny scratch less than 1/16" long just above the base.  There is also slight wear on the base.
Execution:  Perfect execution.
