Allan Port's Brimfield Report - September 1997

A number of people have asked me if you can find any (fine, interesting, antique) paperweights in Brimfield. Brimfield is a large antiques / flea market that takes place in Brimfield, Massachusetts in May, July and September.

These paperweights were found at Brimfield in September, 1997. Although there are many "fields" in Brimfield, this time I only went for one day.  All five paperweights were "found" in one field (out of the 20 or so open).  While these are not the best weights I have ever found in Brimfield, they are representative.  Of course, there were many other paperweights there... including a nice St. Louis Flower Bouquet... but these were the ones I took home.

I also found quite a few paperweight and glass books and auction catalogs.  For a list of what I have for sale, e-mail me at: aport@paperweights.com

1
Boston and Sandwich Glass "mistake". The maker intended to create a double flower, but the design exploded in the making. You can see pieces of a fantasy flower or wild flower (blue and white striped petals) and two millefiori centers (one partially hidden by a worn area on the surface). This paperweight also has a very high profile, not typical of Sandwich. 2 15/16" diam. c.1870.

2 Chinese millefiori paperweight. I bought this weight because it is a large example. I collect Chinese paperweights and am always seeking fine examples (copies of French and American antiques) and large millefiori weights. 3 3/16" diam. c.1930.

3 New England Glass Company Scramble. Includes a distorted Eagle silhouette cane and a three star silhouette canes. 2 1/2" diam. c.1860.

4 Early Whitefriars concentric millefiori paperweight with four circles of millefiori arranged around a central cane. In the "Encyclopedia of Glass Paperweights," Paul Hollister identifies this type as being from the "Classic" period, meaning c.1848. However, some researchers now believe that Whitefriars never made any paperweights that early and these paperweights date from the 1920. 2 9/16" diam. SOLD ON EBAY. Check out my current sales on eBay

5 New England Glass Company Concentric on latticinio ground. Three circles of pink, green, and white complex millefiori around a cogged center cane. The picture is fuzzy because of scratches on the surface. 2 7/8" diam. c1860.
