Peter McDougall 2010 Annual Edition #3 Clichy Style Concentric Millefiorion
Lemon Yellow Ground Paperweight. This paperweight features a
Clichy style setup with two concentric rings of millefiori canes around
a central complex millefiori cane. The outer ring has an alternating
pattern of large turquoise blue complex canes and simpler red canes.
The ground is a translucent yellow. An amazing paperweight.
This paperweight is signed on the bottom with a new complex signature / date cane that includes the initials "PMcD" and 10 for the year 2010. PMcD. It also has a paper label "PMcD Glass Studio LTD, Handmade in Crieff Scotland." This is one of Peter McDougall's special 2010 limited edition paperweights and is limited to 35 paperweights. It is etched on the bottom 8/35 below the signature cane. It comes with a certificate identifying the paperweight. The picture does not do justice to this paperweight. Ignore the white areas, they are glare from the lights. The dark area on the left side of the paperweight is due to the label on the bottom. Size: Just over 2 1/2 diameter by just over 1 3/4
high.

Peter McDougall Small Spaced Complex Millefiori Paperweight.
New design from Peter McDougall consisting of 19 different complex millefiori
canes over an almost opaque black ground. The pattern can be called
a concentric, but most collectors would refer to this as a spaced millefiori
design. A crisp design with perfect execution. It is
signed on the bottom with a complex cane made from four separate letter
canes forming the signature PMcD and also has a paper label "PMcD Glass
Studio LTD, Handmade in Crieff Scotland."
Size: Just under 2 1/4 diameter by just over 1 9/16 high.

Peter McDougall Medium Ribbed Millefiori Paperweight. This
paperweight consists four concentric circles of millefiori around four
central millefiori canes. Although it is not a true concentric, it
gives the appearance of a concentric because the pattern is so regular.
The ground is black. It is signed in the design with a complex cane
made from four separate letter canes forming the signature PMcD (as shown
in the close-up).
This is often called a pressed weight because a mold is used to form the outside ribbing. The top is flattened. The ribbing gives the glass a real glittery appearance as you can see in the picture. The picture does not do justice to this paperweight. Ignore the white areas, they are glare from the lights. Medium Size: 2 5/8" diameter by 1 1/4" high.

Large Antique Clichy Millefiori Scramble Paperweight.
circa 1845. This is an antique Clichy millefiori scramble or end
of the day weight. It consists of two layers of millefiori.
From the top you see the tight quilt like arrangement of pieces of millefiori.
From the bottom you see a different layer that looks more like a closepack
setup. This is a great example worthy of any collection of antique
weights.
Clichy paperweights are highly sought after by collectors for their complex canes and brilliant colors. Almost all Clichy paperweights are unsigned. The Clichy factory was founded at Billancourt near Paris in 1837. Shortly after that it moved to Clichy-la-Garenne, which gave the factory its best known name. They stayed in operation until about the 1870s. Although many people collect scramble paperweights for their own merit, scrambles are also valuable tools for learning to identify the different colors and canes used by each factory. There are a lot of different canes in this paperweight. To call this a scramble or end of day weight is deceptive, since Clichy executed these designs with precision. Unlike other scrambles the pieces fit together like a jigsaw puzzle or quilt. The style is unique to Clichy. Large Size: Just over 2 5/8" diameter by 2" high.
The base is ground concave.

Baccarat 1986 Magnum Larkspur (Delphinium) Lampwork Paperweight.
Circa 1986. This paperweight has a large colorful floral bouquet
of pink and white and blue and white Delphiniums or Larkspurs with unopened
buds and stems. The bouquet is tied with a pink and white ribbon.
It is signed in the design with a simple white rose having a complex "B
1986" millefiori cane in the center, although this signature cane is flawed.
All of this is over a white honeycomb ground and a lower transparent blue
ground. It is also signed a second time on the bottom with Baccarat's
logo. Every collector should have one of these in his or her collection.
The name delphinium derives from the Greek word meaning "Little Dolphin." It is the flower of the month for July and stands for fickleness. This is a hard to find Baccarat paperweight. The design was produced only in 1986 in a limited edition of 200 paperweights. This is number 77 in that series. There is a signature cane B 1986 shown in the pictures. The bottom has the Baccarat logo plus it is engraved with the year (1986), the number (77) and the size of the series (200). Magnum Size: 3 1/4" diameter by 2 1/3" high. The bottom
is ground concave.
Baccarat currently suggests a retail price of $1,321 for this paperweight, but my price is much lower. You can read more about modern Baccarat paperweights in the book The Art of the Paperweight by Larry Selman. Large Ed Rithner Multi-Colored Candy Cane Millefiori Paperweight.
circa
1940-1970. A wonderful example of a relatively rare style of paperweight.
The millefiori canes are striped lengthwise and are placed over a transparent
red ground. The canes are various colors of red, blue, green,
yellow and white.
A wonderful example of a relatively rare style of paperweight. Please ignore the white areas in the pictures; they are caused by the light. Ed Rithner worked in Wellsburg, West Virginia from 1908 to the 1970s or later. This is a well documented and unique Ed Rithner style. A similar paperweight is shown and described on page 129 of Jean Melvin's book on American Glass Paperweights and their Makers. There is also a color photo of this style of paperweight with a white ground on one of the color plates between pages 48 and 49 in the same book. All of Rithner's weights are unsigned. Large Size: 3 1/8" diameter by 2 1/4" high.

Peter McDougall Miniature Closepack Millefiori Paperweight. This
paperweight consists a close packed design of millefiori canes over an
opaque black ground. Peter McDougall's traditional "PMcD" signature
cane appears in the design. In addition, it is signed on the bottom
with a paper label ""PMcD Glass Studio LTD, Hand Made in Crieff Scotland."
A really sparkling little paperweight.
Peter made a similar design at Perthshire Paperweights. It was one of my favorite designs. Originally Perthshire made a simple closepack like this only as a doorknob. In 1997, I asked Peter McDougall if he would make one for me as a paperweight. They liked the result so much that they decided to put it into regular production in two sizes. The picture does not do justice to this paperweight. Ignore the white areas, they are glare from the lights. Miniature Size: Just under 1 7/8" diameter by just over

Magnum Antique Graeser Loyal Order of Moose Paperweight.
circa 1890. This uniquely American style paperweight features a detailed
image of a moose with very large antlers inside the circular logo "LOYAL
ORDER OF MOOSE P.A.P." On each side of the moose are two colorful
hand painted floral sprays. The Loyal Order of Moose symbol

are hand painted decorations. Both are on a white enamel disk.
After the decorations were complete the disk was encased in glass.
The letters P.A.P. are an abbreviation for "Purity Aid and Progress."
The hand painted floral sprays are outstanding. A wonderful paperweight. For more information on this style of paperweight see the article "Fraternally Yours" by William Price, Jr. in the 2001 Annual Bulletin of the Paperweight Collectors Association. This style of paperweight is also described on page 413 of American Glass by George and Helen McKearin. Magnum Size: Just under 3 3/4" diameter by 2 1/4" high.

Rare Early 1988 Signed Abelman / Ward Blue Floral Sculptural Paperweight.
circa
1988. This paperweight a blue floral bouquet set against a black
background. This three dimensional sculptural paperweight is an early
lampwork creation of Mayauel Ward and Stuart Abelman. The three dimensional
bouquet of nine flowers plus leaves and stems is set on a black ground
with a clear layer on top. It is absolutely spectacular.
Stuart Abelman studied glass at Carnegie Mellon University and in the Master of Fine Arts program at UCLA (California). He taught a developed a flat glass program for El Camino College and in 1977 opened his Abelman Glass Studio in Van Nuys, CA. Mayauel Ward is one of the premier lampwork artists working today. He started with a glass class taught by Stuart Abelman at El Camino College. After completing his studies, he went to work at Correia Glass where he worked with Ken Rosenfeld. In 1979 he joined the Abelman Glass Studio where he started making lampwork designs in 1987. Although he continued to work at Abelman, he also built a studio in his home in Manhattan Beach, CA. His work is uniquely his own although he gets inspiration from the fine lampwork designs of Paul Stankard and Chris Buzzini. There are articles about Mayauel Ward in the 1997 and 2006 issues of the Annual Bulletin of the Paperweight Collectors Association. Magnum Size: 3 15/16" tall by just under 3" wide by 1 5/8"

with hidden Clichy Rose in center. circa 1845. This antique
Clichy concentric millefiori paperweight has two rings of complex canes
around a larger complex center cane. The outer ring has an alternating
pattern of two white Clichy edelweiss canes and then a single large dark
blue-purple pastry mold cane. The pattern is repeated five times.
The inner ring consists of pink and green complex canes that resemble color
of the pink and green rose cane. There is a central red and white
pastry mold cane. In the center of this pastry mold cane is a hidden
pink and green Clichy rose surrounded by seven white edelweiss canes.
Clichy paperweights are highly sought after by collectors for their complex canes and brilliant colors. The pink and green Clichy rose is one of the most recognizable Clichy canes. In general, this style of alternating canes in the outer ring, with two of once size and then one larger cane is most often associated with Clichy concentrics. There are, however, very rare examples where Baccarat also made concentrics in this Clichy style. Almost all Clichy paperweights are unsigned. The Clichy factory was founded at Billancourt near Paris in 1837. Shortly after that it moved to Clichy-la-Garenne, which gave the factory its best known name. They stayed in operation until about the 1870s. Miniature Size: Just over 1 3/4" diameter by 1 1/5" high.
The base is ground concave.

Rare Huge AVEM Murano Millefiori Doorstop or Paperweight possibly
by Anzolo Fuga. circa 1950-1960. Wonderful huge millefiori
paperweight from A.V.E.M. in Murano. This style is hollow blown with
the millefiori design in the surface layers. There are several
layers to this paperweight starting with a green inner layer. A layer
of silver foil comes next and then several layers of filigree and
millefiori followed by a clear encasement layer. This is a truly
wonderful paperweight.
A.V.E.M. or Arte Vetraria Muranese was founded on the Island of Murano in Venice, Italy in 1932. This piece was probably designed by Anzolo Fuga, who also decorated the pieces with millefiori slices under the direction of master glass maker Luciano Ferro. Fuga was at A.V.E.M. from 1955 to 1962. For more details see pages 48 & 49 of the book Fifties Glass by Leslie Pina. Very Large Size: Approximately 7 1/4" diameter by 4 3/8"
high. The paperweight weighs almost six pounds. The pontil mark has
been ground flat. There is an opening in the bottom. This is
a hollow blown paperweight.

also has a paper label "PMcD Glass Studio LTD, Handmade in Crieff Scotland."

Antique Bohemian Concentric Millefiori Paperweight.
c.1860-1900. This concentric millefiori has two rings of complex
canes around a larger complex center cane. The outer ring has an
alternating pattern of green and white canes. The inner ring consists
of identical purple canes with white centers.
This style of concentric paperweight is sometimes called Clichy style because many Clichy concentric paperweights featuring an alternating design of one larger cane and two or more smaller canes. Baccarat also used a similar pattern in rare examples to create Clichy look-alikes. It is possible, but unlikely, that this paperweight is of French rather than Bohemian origin. Small Size: 2 1/8" diameter by 1 1/8"" high. The bottom
is ground concave. The glass has a very slight gray tinge.
There are a few tiny flecks of debris in the glass.

Antique Bohemian Miniature Concentric Millefiori Paperweight with
Blue and White Swirl Ground. Circa 1870 - 1910. Colorful
antique paperweight with a concentric design of six red, white, and green
complex millefiori arranged around a large red and white millefiori center.
The pattern is arranged over a blue and white swirl basket ground.
There are some wonderful complex canes in this paperweight. An interesting
example of a type of weight that is becoming more in demand as collectors
find out more about the various Bohemian factories. This is a rare
item.
The maker of this paperweight is unknown, except that it is believed to originate in the region along the Czech - German border, hence the label Bohemian. Most likely from Silesia or Thuringia. The glass is slightly gray and has many tiny bubbles. The gray glass and bubbles make the pictures look a lot worse than the actual paperweight. A less elaborate example can be found in the book by von Brackel, Paperweights: Historicism - Art Nouveau - Art Deco - 1842 to Today See figure 542. Miniature Size: 1 3/4" diameter by 1 1/4" high.

| 2961 | Antique Baccarat Faceted Four Row Concentric Millefiori Paperweight.
Probably Circa 1845-1860. Colorful faceted concentric millefiori
paperweight with four rows of complex millefiori canes around a central
cane over a clear ground. This paperweight has six concave side facets
and a concave top facet. There is a good assortment of canes in the
is weight.
The green canes in the color scheme are a little unusual and it is possible that this is later than the classic period and even possibly from the Dupont period. You can read more about the Baccarat paperweights in the book The Encyclopedia of Glass Paperweights by Paul Hollister or the book World Paperweights by Robert Hall. Medium Size: Just over 2 1/2" diameter by 1 13/16" high.
Bottom is ground slightly concave. There are six side facets and one top
facet, all concave.

Magnum Murano Pedestal Millefiori Crown Paperweight.
circa 1930-1970. Wonderful example of a Murano pedestal crown paperweight
with millefiori canes on top. The crown is formed from 24 alternating
strands of rose and white colored twists. The rose colored twists
have gold edges to add sparkle. There are fourteen millefiori canes
on top. An outstanding paperweight for any collector of paperweights
or Murano glass.
Crown weights are considered by some to be the most exciting of all millefiori designs. They are extremely difficult to make. Pedestal crowns are the most desirable. Please ignore the white areas on the base. They are reflections and not on the paperweight. Size: 3 1/4" diameter by just over 4 1/2 high.
The base is just under 3 1/2" diameter. The base is cone shaped and
all wear is on the outer edges.

Large Antique Footed Millville Umbrella Paperweight. circa
1860-1910. This style of old paperweight is associated with Millville.
Examples date from as early as 1860 and continued to be made until about
1912. Many, if not all, were made at the Whitall Tatum factory in
Millville. The design consists of a white mushroom shape with a center
bubble. Additional colored bits of glass are added and melted into
the top. Then the outer edges of the tent are pulled down to a number
of points to form an umbrella shape with ribs or pleats. This is
a large showy example.
The umbrella shaped weights were originally modeled to resemble the wild tiger lily of Southern New Jersey. You can read about umbrella weights from Millville in the book Old Glass Paperweights of Southern New Jersey: An American Folk Art by Clarence A. Newell. It is not possible to identify the exact maker, but John Ruhlander, Emil Stanger, Marcus Kuntz, and Horace Rhubarth, and Ralph Barber are all known to have made weights of this style. Sometimes the style is also used as part of an inkwell or other object. Large Size: Just under 3 1/3" diameter by 3 3/5" high.
The diameter of the foot is 3". The bottom is finished although there
is some remnant of the pontil mark.

Small Antique Dated New England Glass Company Scramble Paperweight
with seven date canes.
c. 1852. This is a fantastic small to
medium sized antique New England Glass Company (NEGC) scramble or end of
day paperweight. It has at least seven complete or partial
date canes plus a fabulous variety of complex and non-complex millefiori
canes and an assortment of latticinio twist canes. The date canes
each have a 1852 or 1825 date cane depending on how you look at it plus
a running rabbit in the center and two more on the border between the ends
of the date. It is unusual to find a scramble with so many date canes.
A wonderful rare example.
There are a lot of different canes in this paperweight. Take a close look at the pictures. I wasn't able to get good pictures of the canes near the base so there are even more than you can see. Although many people collect scramble paperweights for their own merit, scrambles are also valuable tools for learning to identify the different colors and canes used by each factory. New England Glass Company (NEGC) operated in Cambridge, Massachusetts from 1818 to 1888. You can read about paperweights from the New England Glass Company in the book by Hawley, The Art of the Paperweight - The Boston & Sandwich and New England Glass Companies. Antique Bohemian Goat Sulphide Paperweight. Circa 1890
- 1930. This paperweight has a sulphide of a goat placed over a multicolored
frit ground.
The maker of this paperweight is unknown, except that it is believed to originate in the region along the Czech - German border, hence the label Bohemian. Most likely from Silesia or Thuringia. Sulphide paperweights were also made in Belgium, but the style is different. The glass is slightly gray and has many tiny bubbles. Sulphides are cast objects (animals, flowers, people) made of a ceramic material that has properties similar to the surrounding glass. They are normally white, but are also sometimes colored or even painted. The objects are cast in a mold that copied or made directly from a medallion, coin or sculpture. The finest French sulphides are cast in a mold made by a skilled artist. Often a sulphide will have a silvery appearance due to a thin layer of trapped bubbles between the glass and the sulphide itself. Sometimes the sulphide material is not compatible with the glass and a fracture may develop. Small Size: 2 1/8" diameter by 1 1/2" high.

Vintage Salvador Ysart Millefiori Carousel Paperweight. Circa
1946-1955. This colorful Ysart paperweight has a six legged carousel
made of striped twists over a central green frit ground with two concentric
circles of millefiori. There is a carefully placed bubble in the
center of the design. The canes and construction are generally associated
with early Ysart family weights made by Salvador Ysart. This is a
very nice showy example.
The glass has a slight smoky tinge as is typical of early Ysart weights. I've consulted with the experts on Scottish glass and they have affirmed that this is an Ysart Carousel Paperweight, most likely made by Salvador Ysart in the post war period 1946 to 1955. Salvador Ysart died in 1955. Paul Ysart made two similar styles of paperweights, one of which was called a Fountain Paperweight. Both styles have differences that distinguish them from the work of Salvador. The birth of Scottish paperweight making is credited to the glass making family of Salvador Ysart, who moved to Crieff, Scotland in 1922. They worked first at John Moncrieff Ltd and made the earliest Scottish paperweights during that period. In 1946 Salvadore and his sons Augustine and Vincent founded Ysart Brothers Glass and produced glass wares under the Vasart label. The company name was later changed to Vasart Glass. Large Size: Just over 3" diameter by 2 1/3 high.

Strathearn Limited Edition Millefiori Commemorative Paperweight
for Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee. Circa 1977. This
Strathearn EIIR Millefiori Crown paperweight was made for the Silver Jubilee
of Queen Elizabeth II in 1977. It celebrates the 25th anniversary
of her reign starting February 6, 1952. The millefiori design of
red and white millefiori canes depicts a stylized version of the Saint
Edward's Crown worn by the British monarch. The millefiori are identical
red and white millefiori with the exception of the cane in the center of
the crown which is in the shape of a white cross surrounded by red.
The text "1952-1977 EIIR" is deeply engraved in the back surface.
EIIR stands for Elizabeth II Regina, where Regina is latin for Queen.
This paperweight is #84 in a series of only 250 weights.
The paperweight is designed to be displayed upright and is faceted on the display face and the back face. The paperweight was originally planned for a limited edition of 1,000 weights, but the edition was limited to 250 due to problems at the factory. Alistair Gordon the was the engraver of the paperweight. Strathearn Glass was formed in a reorganization of Vasart glass in 1963. Stuart Drysdale was hired manage the business side of the enterprise in 1960. Vincent Ysart was the Works Manager. George Dunlop provided a portion of the financial backing. The senior craftsman, Jack Allen, was assisted by two glass blowers and a few apprentices. Czech / Bohemian Faceted Trumpet Flower Paperweight.
c.1900-1930. Trumpet flower paperweight with four blossoms.
There is one large center flower and three smaller ones under it.
There is a planned bubble in the center of each flower. It is faceted
with one row of nine facets around at the base. The dome is left
unfaceted in this example. The flowers are pushed down to a
green frit ground. The glass is heavy crystal.
This style is also called an icepick flower because of the sharp tool used to push each flower down to the base. In this case the tool is pushed through a multi-colored glass slice. Some authors call these morning glory flowers. Von Brackel discusses this style in his book He lists many variations on pages 106 to 149 with a wide range of values up to $300 and more. On pages 278 & 279 he describes the process used to make a trumpet flower paperweight. This style of faceting is called style 31 on page 267. Size: 2 3/4" diameter by just under 2 3/4"" high. The bottom
is ground flat.

Rick Ayotte House Sparrows Limited Edition Paperweight. circa
1982. This paperweight features a pair of house sparrows on two branches.
The birds are very three dimensional as they blend with the foliage.
The ground is white. This is an early paperweight by Rick Ayotte.
It is signed "Ayotte 2/50 '82" on the edge indicating that it was part
of a limited edition of 50 paperweights.
This weight appears in the book Songs without Words: The Art of the Paperweight - Rick Ayotte. This weight is shown on page 60 and is catalog number A95. This paperweight comes with an insert from Rick that provides background information on the House Sparrow. As is typical of some of Rick's early weights, this paperweight has a relatively flat profile. The low profile allows Rick to fill the weight with details and avoid optical distortion, but it also made it difficult eliminate all the glare from the lights when taking pictures. Roland "Rick" Ayotte specializes in paperweights with themes from nature, including lampworked bird and other animals, flowers, fruits, and berries. His paperweights range in size from miniatures to super magnums. He also produces other wonderful glass art objects. He lives and works in Nashua, New Hampshire and has been making glass paperweights since 1978. Size: 2 3/4" diameter by 1 7/8" high.

Large Charles Kaziun Jr. Yellow Rose Perfume Bottle.
circa 1960-1980.
Large bottle with large yellow crimp rose and leaves in the stopper.
The stopper is signed under the leaves with a complex cane consisting of
a blue K surrounded by a ring of heart canes. The bottle itself is
from Pairpoint glass and has the controlled bubble pattern typical of Pairpoint.
This is a rare item by Charles Kaziun. It has a history. I purchased this from an elderly lady who was not a collector. She worked for a doctor who knew Charles Kaziun personally and who collected Kaziun paperweights. The lady said she picked out the bottle at Pairpoint and asked Charles Kaziun to make a stopper for it. Kaziun often used Pairpoint bottles for his larger objects. This style of bottle can be seen in other examples of Kaziun crimp rose perfume bottles, so the combination is not unusual. Size: 5 2/3" tall including the stopper. The bottle itself
is 3" in diameter by 3 1/8" tall. The stopper is 3 1/3 tall by just

Flower Paperweight on Jasper Ground. circa 1869 - 1888.
This is an antique Boston and Sandwich Glass Company Cruciform Flower or
Cross Paperweight with a red white and blue jasper ground. The floral
arrangement with a red stalk and contrasting colored tips of green green
leaves is unique to B&S. There are two leaves and a secondary
cross of four smaller leaves. The two large leaves show good details
typical of B&S. This is a rare weight. Every collector of B&S
should have one in his or her collection.
The Boston & Sandwich Glass Company (B&S) operated in Sandwich , Massachusetts on Cape Cod from 1826 to 1888. Large Vintage Murano Millefiori Mushroom Concentric Paperweight.
circa 1970. Fantastic Murano millefiori mushroom paperweight with
concentric millefiori pattern. It has four rings of pastel colored
cog and floral canes around a center cane. The outer ring of cog
canes is pulled down to a small base to form a stave basket.
Most Murano attempts at a mushroom do not pull the canes down to the base. This is one of those rare exceptions where the quality of execution equals that of a St. Louis Mushroom. A very hard to find example of the best of Murano millefiori designs. Large Size: 3 diameter by 3 5/8 high. The
bottom is ground flat.

| 2573 | Magnum Antique Union Glass (Somerville, Massachusetts) Paperweight
"THOMAS KENNY 1923".
Circa 1923. This is a fantastic Union Glass
Company Paperweight featuring a Boston & Sandwich - Lutz style Double
Poinsettia in the center with five leaves. There is an outer garland
of red and blue flowers. The legend has crisp white lettering "THOMAS KENNY
1923". The date is probably accurate, meaning the paperweight was most
likely made in 1923, so it is 87 years old.
Union Glass of Somerville, Massachusetts is the third of three related factories in the Boston area. The first two were the Boston & Sandwich (B&S) Glass Company and the New England Glass Company (NEGC). Both B&S and NEGC produced paperweights at the same time, both were founded by Deming Jarvis, and both declared bankruptcy in 1888. Union Glass came a little later. It operated from 1851 to 1929. These name/date paperweights are made with lampwork flowers and letters and are not frit weights. There are some nice articles in the literature including a lengthy article in the Paperweight Collectors Association 2004 Annual. There is also a short chapter in George Kulles' third book - Identifying Antique Paperweights - The Less Familiar. Nicholas Lutz worked at Union Glass from 1895 to 1904 and his influence can be seen on the Union Glass flowers although most of these weights were made after Lutz's death. There is some current speculation that Lutz had an apprentice who continued to work at Union Glass and was responsible for not only some of the better Union Glass examples, but also some of the fine lampwork paperweights attributed to Mount Washington Glass. Very Large Size: 3 5/8" diameter by 2 7/8" high.
It weighs 2 1/2 pounds. The bottom is ground flat.

Magnum Alex Stelzer Libbey Glass Name Floral Paperweight "E. BROWN".
Circa
1915. This is a desirable Libbey Glass Name Weight. Four
icepick flowers around a central icepick flower. There is a central
bubble in each flower. The name E. BROWN is formed of tiny bits
of clear glass. The glass is grayish as is typical of Toledo folk
weights.
This style of paperweight is attributed to Alex Stelzer, a Czechoslovakian immigrant glassworker, who worked at Libbey Glass in Toledo Ohio from 1907 to 1948. It is a folk weights made by the glass worker in his free time and often given away. Stelzer had a friendship with Arthur Gorham, a well known paperweight collector and dealer who sold paperweights in his shop in Millville New Jersey. The Stelzer name is spelled in some places as Steltzer. The only printed reference I would find on Alex Stelzer was in the 1970 edition of Jean Melvin's American Glass Paperweights and their Makers. Very Large Size: 3 1/2" diameter by 3 1/8" high.
The bottom is ground flat with a matte finish.

Perthshire PP5 Medium Millefiori Paperweight. circa 1985.
This is a medium paneled weight with an unusual pattern of five panels,
each with a 1-2-3-4 pattern, then a ring of radial twists with two canes
at each corner, plus an outer ring of canes. The ground is a translucent
green. It is signed in the center of the design with a Perthshire
"P" cane and also has a paper label "PERTHSHIRE PAPERWEIGHTS CRIEFF SCOTLAND".
It will ship with its original Perthshire box.
This PP5 pattern is not one of the patterns documented in the Complete Guide to Perthshire Paperweights, but I believe it to be a PP5. Size: 2 1/2" diameter by 1 3/4" high.

Antique Miniature St. Mandé Concentric Paperweight.
circa 1841 - 1857. This is an antique St. Mandé Concentric
Paperweight with two rings of colorful millefiori canes around a
complex central canes. The outer ring of complex canes has alternating
white and blue canes. The millefiori canes are set high in the glass
over a clear ground. A rare example for the advanced collector.
Very little is known about the St. Mandé factory. This was a small one pot glass factory in the village of St. Mandé, France. Operated by Joseph Nocus, the factory was in operation from 1841 to 1857. During that period the factory won several awards and mentions in trade journals. When signed, the weights have an StM signature cane. Paul Hollister incorrectly referred to the factory as St. Maude in his Encyclopedia of Glass Paperweights, but George Kulles persisted and eventually identified the correct name in 1991. There is a section on St. Mandé in the Kulles book Identifying Antique Paperweights - The Less Familiar. Since then additional documentation and evidence has been uncovered. There have also been several articles on St. Mandé in the PCA Annual Bulletins, notably in 1991, 1999, and newer issues. It has been estimated that there are only a few hundred St. Mandé paperweights known to exist, but I suspect that other weights exist but have been attributed to various Bohemian factories. Size: 1 7/8" diameter by 1 3/8" high.

Large Ed Rithner Multi-Colored Candy Cane Millefiori Paperweight.
circa
1940-1970. A wonderful example of a relatively rare style of paperweight.
The millefiori canes are striped lengthwise and are placed over a transparent
turquoise ground. The canes are various colors of red, blue,
green, and white.
Super Magnum Gentile Calla Lily Dooorstop Paperweight, attributed
to Gertrude Gentile. circa 1970. Very large paperweight
featuring three blue calla lilly type icepick flowers over a white ground.
There is a large elongated central bubble in the center of each flower
and also between each flower. When a paperweight is this large it
is generally called a doorstop. A truly magnificent paperweight.
This style has been attributed to Gertrude Gentile. A similar example is shown in the book American Glass Paperweights and Their Makers by Jean Melvin (1970). This style of flower is called an ice-pick flower because of the ice-pick like tool used to form each flower and push the glass down to the ground to form a stem. Magnum Baccarat Limited Edition Blue Campanule (Bellflower) Paperweight.
Circa
1983. This is a spectacular blue bellflower paperweight with three
flowers and a bud plus six leaves and a stem. The bellflowers are
a rich blue with deep ribbing. The design is placed over a transparent
amber ground. It is signed in the design with a millefiori signature
cane "B 1983" and also signed on the bottom with the Baccarat logo.
Perfect execution and perfect condition.
Baccarat started making lampwork paperweights in the early 1970s, following the introduction of modern sulphide paperweights in 1953 and modern millefiori paperweights in 1958. This design was produced only in 1983 in a limited edition of 175 paperweights. This is number 50 in that series. There is a signature cane "B 1983" shown in the pictures. The bottom has the acid etched Baccarat logo plus it is engraved with the year (1983), the number (50) and the size of the series (175). Some sellers on eBay sell this for the full retail price of $1,573, but my price is much lower. Magnum Size: 3 1/8" diameter by just under 2 3/8" high.
Bottom is ground slightly concave. Made by Baccarat in France in 1983.

Antique Boston & Sandwich Glass Company (B&S) Blue Double
Poinsettia with Lutz rose. circa 1871 - 1888. This is a
antique Boston and Sandwich Double Poinsettia with a two rings of five
deep blue petals arranged around a signature Lutz rose. The flower
is placed over a clear glass ground. There are two leaves and a stem.
Great color with a large Lutz rose in the center. The leaves have
great texture.
Nicolas Lutz (1838 - 1906) was the best known American paperweight maker in the 19th century. He started at making glass and paperweights at the Cristalleries de Saint Louis in France in 1848. In the US, Lutz worked at Dorflinger, the New England Glass Company, Boston & Sandwich, and at Union Glass. He started at B&S in 1871. The rose cane at the center of this paperweight is considered his signature, although there is no way to know for sure that he made the paperweight. Unfortunately the flower split slightly when it was encased in glass. This is a chance to own a B&S Double Poinsettia with a Lutz rose at a bargain price. Size: 2 9/16" diameter by 1 9/16" high.

Caithness Period Whitefriars 1985 Faceted Millefiori Paperweight
with Butterfly Cane. circa 1985. This paperweight with
three rings of pink and white complex millefiori around the complex central
cane over a translucent blue ground. The complex center cane consists
of two rings of pink and white millefiori around a central butterfly silhouette
cane. Every millefiori cane in this paperweight is a complex cane.
It is faceted with one large top facet and six smaller side facets.
It is signed and dated on the bottom with the Whitefriars signature cane
dated 1985 and a Whitefriar silhouette. A wonderful design
This paperweight is one of the transition period paperweights issued after Caithness purchased the Whitefriars name in 1980. It is not clear which factory made it, but it is easy to suspect it was made in Scotland by the construction. It does not appear in any of the Whitefriars catalogs nor in the Colin Terris publications on Caithness. I have seen this paperweight with a 1984 date and also a 1985 date. It may also exist for other years. Whitefriars closed in 1980 and the name was purchased by Caithness Glass. Caithness was founded by Robin Sinclair in Wick in north eastern Scotland in 1961. The factory did not start making paperweights until 1962 when Paul Ysart joined Caithness. Colin Terris joined Caithness in 1968 and started the modern line of paperweights in 1969. A second factory was opened in Oban in 1969 and the Perth factory opened in 1979. In 1980, Caithness purchased the Whitefriars name and designs. More recently Caithness recently went through a number of changes of ownership. It was purchased by Edinburgh Crystal in 2004 and then by Dartington Crystal in 2006. The company remains in business today. Size: 2 1/3" diameter by 1 5/8" high. The base is
ground flat. Faceted with one large top facet and six smaller side
facets.

Hugh Smith Cattails Paperweight. circa 1969 -1975.
An unusual paperweight featuring a spray of three cattails and eight leaves
placed on a green-brown jasper ground. It is signed with an
HS cane at the base of the cattails and also scratch signed on the base.
A wonderful example of a rare style of paperweight. Hugh Smith made only a small number of paperweights and many stayed in his family. Please ignore the white areas in the pictures; they are caused by the light. Hugh Edmund Smith and Carolyn Marie Smith were paperweight collectors in Millville, New Jersey who also made paperweights from 1967 to about 1975. Hugh used an HS cane and also sometimes scratch signed the base. Both husband and wife usually made small weights featuring a single flower set on a contrasting jasper ground. Hugh Smith also made some crimp roses. Their work was considered good enough to earn an entry in Dunlop's Dictionary of Glass Paperweights. Size: 2 1/3" diameter by 1 13/16" high.

Early Orient & Flume Art Nouveau Style Paperweight with possible
GES signature cane. circa 1974. This is a wonderful example
of an early Orient & Flume art nouveau style paperweight. It
has an iridescent surface decorated with an art nouveau style floral design
consisting of three blue flowers against an ivory background. It
is signed on the bottom "Orient & Flume 245 M 74".
There is also what appears to be a signature cane in the center of the bottom "GES". The use of this cane is previously undocumented, so it is possible that this is a fluke rather than a deliberate inclusion of a signature cane. Orient & Flume was started in 1972 in Chico, California by Douglas Boyd and David Hopper. It studio took its name from its initial location which was at the corner of Orient & Flume. Their early weights adopted a style that has become known as the California style of iridescent paperweights with surface torchworked art nouveau motifs on the outside surface of the weight. Later work involved interior lampworked designs. Size: Just under 2 7/8" diameter by 1 3/4"" high.

Perthshire Annual Edition 1979E Seal Paperweight. circa
1979. This magnum sized paperweight features a performing circus
seal perched on a red and white spiral striped stand and balancing a red
and white striped ball on its nose. This is one of a series of hollow
weights each with a different animal. The paperweight has a translucent
ruby flash overlay and is faceted with one large top facet and 16 side
facets. It is signed with a "P" signature cane on the base of the
seal's stand. It comes with its original certificate identifying
this as #213 out of a limited edition of 400 weights. Only 275 were
actually made in the series, making this one of the rarer paperweights.
The hollow weights like this are one of the favorites of collectors since they are so difficult to make. This one in particular is a joy to examine. Take a look at the close-up picture to see the detail with the seal wrapping his limbs around the stand for balance as he maneuvers the ball. Perthshire made this paperweight as one of their annual collection items. This means the design was made only that one year and never again. Magnum Size: 3 7/16" diameter by 2 3/4" high.

Arculus or Walsh-Walsh Concentric Paperweight with 1848 Date.
circa 1920. This paperweight has five rings of pink and white, green
and red, and green and white millefiori cog canes around a yellow center
cane. The second ring from the outside has four canes with a date
1848. It has the setup and low profile typical to old English paperweights
from factories such as Walsh-Walsh and Arculus.
Arculus was founded as R.W. Winfield of Birmingham in 1864. It was renamed Alfred Arculus & Company in 1875. Arculus produced millefiori paperweights and other glassware in Birmingham from around 1920 to about 1941. John Walsh Walsh produced millefiori paperweights and other glassware from about 1915 to about 1951. They acquired Arculus in 1931. For a long time, collectors believed that English paperweights dated 1848 were made by Whitefriars. The dates, however, are false dates and have been traced to production at Arculus and Walsh-Walsh in the 1920s and 1930s. Most paperweights referred to as old Whitefriars or antique Whitefriars were, in fact, made by other factories such as Richardson, Arculus, Walsh-Walsh, or one of the unidentified Old English factories. When the maker can not be identified, it is best to call them Whitefriars type or even just Old English paperweights. Size: 2 5/8" diameter by just under 1 1/2" high.
The base is ground concave.

five interlocking rings of red and white millefiori canes. There
are two complex date canes with the number 19 and 76 on each side of the

Chinese Concentric Millefiori Paperweight. circa 1930. This
is a copy of a Clichy paperweight from France made in the classic period
from 1845-1860. Clear ground. This type is not as common as the other
patterned millefiori weights, nor is it as intricate. The millefiori
canes are simple canes. Perhaps it was made later or perhaps by a
different factory.

Magnum Antique Union Glass (Somerville, Massachusetts) Paperweight
"From Jeff to Tom (1913)".
Circa 1913. This is a great Union
Glass Company Paperweight featuring a Boston & Sandwich - Lutz style
Double Poinsettia in the center with six leaves. The legend speaks
for itself, this was a gift from Jeff to Tom. The date is probably
accurate, meaning the paperweight was most likely made in 1913, so it is
97 years old.
Very Large Size: 4" diameter by 2 7/8" high.
It weighs 3 pounds.

Early Perthshire PP22 Concentric Scent Bottle. Circa 1973-1982.
Early Perthshire scent bottle with a concentric design five rings of millefiori
around a central P signature cane. The design is placed over a cobalt
blue. The five ring design was made from 1983 to 1986. Warm
colors and perfect execution.
The outer ring of millefiori is hidden by the curvature of the bottle and is difficult to see although it does show up in the pictures. The standard reference on Perthshire states that bottles made in this early period have only four rings, so this may be an exception. I am confident that this is an earlier period bottle. Size: Just under 5 7/8 tall by 2 7/8 diameter.
The bottle by itself is 3 1/16 tall by 2 7/8 diameter. The stopper
is 3 1/2 long by 7/8 diameter.

Dictionary of Glass Paperweights - an illustrated primer
by Paul H. Dunlop
This book is a thorough current reference on glass paperweights. The author has written a wonderful guide to the world of paperweights, taking care to provide pictures and line drawings to illustrate the knowledge he shares with us. He includes discussions of rarity, contrasts in style, method, and motif. He also contrasts antique and modern versions and provides brief biographies of contemporary makers. All of this is laid out alphabetically. $63 postage paid in the US. Added 5/29/2010 For more information about this book, see my Dictionary of Glass Paperweights Page. | 2132 | Antique Clichy Sulphide Paperweight of Victoria and Albert.
circa 1851. Clichy Sulphide paperweight featuring Queen Victoria
(1819-1901) and Prince Albert (1819-1861). The sulphide is fairly
high in the dome of the paperweight and is over a clear ground. A
wonderful example.
The Clichy factory was founded at Billancourt near Paris in 1837. Shortly after that it moved to Clichy-la-Garenne, which gave the factory its best known name. They stayed in operation until about the 1870s. It is believed that this paperweight may have been made for the 1851 Great Exhibition at the Crystal Palace in London. Prince Albert conceived of the exhibition which was considered the first world's fair. The exhibition was intended to advance the arts and sciences. The precise origin of this sulphide paperweight remains elusive. The Bergstrom Mahler Museum has an identical paperweight which they attribute to Clichy. The Art Institute of Chicago has a version in which the sulphide was colored before being encased. This paperweight, attributed to Clichy, was included in the 1978 Corning Museum of Glass "Paperweights - Flowers which clothe the meadows" exhibition. The Jokelson Collection had a variation with an uncolored (white) sulphide over a green ground. The Jokelson paperweight is also attributed to Clichy. Most authors agree with the Clichy attribution, but there are some authors who attribute the paperweight to Baccarat in France and even to the New England Glass Company in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Ignore the glare from the lights. It was difficult to photograph this paperweight due to the brilliance of the glass. The sulphide is white but I have included some low light pictures to show the detail. Size: Just over 2 3/4" diameter by just over 1 3/4" high.
The base is ground flat.

| 1466 | Vintage Coal Breaker Souvenir Paperweight. circa
1850 -1930. Unusual paperweight made of coal depicting a scene at
an coal breaker building, probably in Pennsylvania. It is designed
to give the impression that it is carved from a lump of hard (anthracite)
coal, but is most likely made from some form of reconstituted coal and
pressed into a mold to resemble the original lump. I can speculate
the material is the byproduct of the coal. The scene depicts a coal
breaker facility with multiple railroad tracks going into the building
and mining cars shown entering or departing. The text at the top
reads "Souvenir Coal Breaker."
A coal breaker's function is to break large chucks of mined coal into smaller pieces which are then washed, sorted by size, and graded. They were common in Pennsylvania from 1800 to until sometime in the early 1900s when they began to be replaced by more modern facilities. They were located near the actual mines. For more information on coal breakers, refer to the Wikipedia article on coal breakers. Size: Just over 2 1/4" wide by 2 1/2" high by 1 7/8" deep.
The design is on the front. The back is molded to resemble coal.
The bottom is flat.

| 2641 | Large Faceted Baccarat Limited Edition Fruit Basket Paperweight.
circa 1976. Classical design with a lampwork basket of fruit over
an opaque white milk glass ground. The basket is filled with luscious
strawberries with leaves attached. It is signed with a Baccarat signature
cane "B 1976" and also signed again on the bottom with the Baccarat logo.
The paperweight is faceted with a large convex top facet and six smaller
convex side facets. Perfect execution.
This is a difficult to find older Baccarat paperweight. The design was produced only in 1976 in a limited edition of 300 paperweights. This is number 64 in that series. There is a signature cane B 1976 shown in the pictures. The bottom has the acid etched Baccarat logo plus it is engraved with the year (1976), the number (64) and the size of the series (300). It is unusual to find a Baccarat paperweight with a white opaque ground as they produced very few designs with this choice of ground. It works perfectly as a contrast to the delicate fruit basket. Large Size: 3" diameter by 1 15/16" high. The bottom is
ground flat. Faceted with a large top facet and six side facets.
All the facets are convex.
Baccarat currently suggests a retail price of $3,542 for this paperweight, but my price is much lower. Baccarat started making lampwork paperweights in the early 1970s, following the introduction of modern sulphide paperweights in 1953 and modern millefiori paperweights in 1958. $675 postage paid in the US. This is a hard to find Baccarat paperweight. The design was produced only in 1975 in a limited edition of 260 paperweights. This is number 114 in that series. There is a signature cane "B 1975" shown in the pictures. The bottom has the Baccarat logo plus it is engraved with the year (1975), the number (114) and the size of the series (260). | 2681 | Correia Art Glass Chanukah Paperweight. This paperweight
has a blue Star of David, Menorah, and Hebrew Chai symbol (meaning "living"
or "for life"). Each symbol appears three times on the paperweight.
The background has a matte finish. The paperweight is made by applying
an overlay of blue glass to a crystal paperweight and then removing the
space between each figure to create the raised symbols. The weight
is signed on the bottom "Correia" and "WE8293 2-00-7".
Correia Art Glass was founded by Steven Correia in 1973. It is located in Santa Monica, California. Currently the company is run by his two children Algerine Correia and Jeffrey Correia. Magnum size: 3 1/16" diameter by 3" high. Signed
"Correia" and "WE8293 2-00-7" on the bottom. Correia registers each
paperweight and I believe the number 8293 is a style and the 2-00-7 is
a series number rather than the year.
