New Additions - Paperweights for Sale
| 2670 | Antique Bohemian Miniature Concentric Millefiori Paperweight with
Blue and White Swirl Ground. Circa 1870 - 1910. Colorful
antique paperweight with a concentric design of six red, white, and green
complex millefiori arranged around a large red and white millefiori center.
The pattern is arranged over a blue and white swirl basket ground.
There are some wonderful complex canes in this paperweight. An interesting
example of a type of weight that is becoming more in demand as collectors
find out more about the various Bohemian factories. This is a rare
item.
The maker of this paperweight is unknown, except that it is believed to originate in the region along the Czech - German border, hence the label Bohemian. Most likely from Silesia or Thuringia. The glass is slightly gray and has many tiny bubbles. The gray glass and bubbles make the pictures look a lot worse than the actual paperweight. A less elaborate example can be found in the book by von Brackel, Paperweights: Historicism - Art Nouveau - Art Deco - 1842 to Today See figure 542. Miniature Size: 1 3/4" diameter by 1 1/4" high.

| 2710 | Large Ed Rithner Multi-Colored Candy Cane Millefiori Paperweight.
Circa
1940-1970. A wonderful example of a relatively rare style of paperweight.
The millefiori canes are striped lengthwise and are placed over a transparent
ground of red, green, yellow and blue yellow colors. The canes are
various colors of red, blue, green, and white.
A wonderful example of a relatively rare style of paperweight. Please ignore the white areas in the pictures; they are caused by the light. Ed Rithner worked in Wellsburg, West Virginia from 1908 to the 1970s or later. This is a well documented and unique Ed Rithner style. A similar paperweight is shown and described on page 129 of Jean Melvin's book on American Glass Paperweights and their Makers. There is also a color photo of this style of paperweight with a white ground on one of the color plates between pages 48 and 49 in the same book. All of Rithner's weights are unsigned. Large Size: 3" diameter by 2 1/16" high.

| 1953 | Early Bob Banford Red Clematis with Buds Paperweight. circa
1973 - 1977. This paperweight has a transparent red clematis with
yellow stamens and 3 buds plus leaves and a stem. The buds are in
different states of maturity, from a small bud just starting to the largest
partially open. The floral arrangement floats above an opaque white
ground. Bob's traditional "B" signature cane appears next to the
stem. This is a very desirable example of Bob's early work.
This was a hard paperweight to photograph because of the white ground. Rest assured that the glass is clear and the ground is white. Bob Banford works in Hammonton, NJ. He started making paperweights in 1971 along with his father, Ray Banford. He continued to make paperweights until 2009. Bob did not date his weights, but this weight is consistent with his early period. Size: 2 1/3" diameter by 1 7/8" high. The bottom
is flat.

Flowers in Flowerpot. circa 1840-1860. This
large example with six wonderful foil flowers in a flowerpot was possibly

in two levels of three flowers each. Very well executed.

| 2605 | Early Perthshire PP4 Medium Concentric Paperweight. Circa
1972 - 1980. Perthshire concentric design with 6 six rings of floret
canes over a clear ground. The rings are pastel tones of light blue,
light green, yellow, mauve, blue and rose. The signature cane in
the outer row contrasts with a darker blue color.
This is one of the few Perthshire designs that have the signature cane in the outer row. Size: Just over 2 3/4” diameter by 1 3/4" high. The
base is hollow ground.

| 1553 | Robert Hamon Bicentennial 1976 Pedestal Eagle Paperweight. circa
1976. This paperweight features a painted sulphide of an American
eagle standing on a red, white and blue banner. The banner
has the dates 1776 and 1976. All this is over a red, white and blue
frit or jasper ground.
Robert Hamon of Scott Depot, West Virginia started making marbles and paperweights in the 1970s or possibly earlier. He made a faceted version of this weight in a limited edition of 250, but I do not know if this is considered part of that series. Possibly it is the prototype for the series. The signature on this paperweight not clear and does not appear to be Hamon's usual H signature, but rather appears to be a WV for Wheaton Village or West Virginia or possibly even an M or a W. Two paperweight authorities have stated with certainty that they believe this to be a Robert Hamon weight. You can read about Robert Hamon in Jean Melvin's book American Glass Paperweights and Their Makers. Size: Just over 2 7/8" diameter by 1 9/16" high. Unusual
pedestal with low profile.

| 1466 | Vintage Coal Breaker Souvenir Paperweight. circa
1850 -1930. Unusual paperweight made of coal depicting a scene at
an coal breaker building, probably in Pennsylvania. It is designed
to give the impression that it is carved from a lump of hard (anthracite)
coal, but is most likely made from some form of reconstituted coal and
pressed into a mold to resemble the original lump. I can speculate
the material is the byproduct of the coal. The scene depicts a coal
breaker facility with multiple railroad tracks going into the building
and mining cars shown entering or departing. The text at the top
reads "Souvenir Coal Breaker."
A coal breaker's function is to break large chucks of mined coal into smaller pieces which are then washed, sorted by size, and graded. They were common in Pennsylvania from 1800 to until sometime in the early 1900s when they began to be replaced by more modern facilities. They were located near the actual mines. For more information on coal breakers, refer to the Wikipedia article on coal breakers. Size: Just over 2 1/4" wide by 2 1/2" high by 1 7/8" deep.
The design is on the front. The back is molded to resemble coal.
The bottom is flat.

| 2683 | Magnum Antique Bent Wire Name Paperweight. circa
1900-1930. Unusual example of a bent wire name (Janice Puner) over
a white ground of icepick flowers. The name is formed in script from
two sections of red (possibly copper) wire. There are six icepick
flowers, each with a bubble in the center and also six additional bubbles
placed between each flower. An interesting paperweight made either
in Bohemia, elsewhere in Europe, or possibly the US.
Von Brackel discusses this style in his book (see pages 210 to 217). He illustrates a number of different styles of bent wire name weights over various grounds and attributes them possibly to several different locations in Bohemia, Germany, Belgium or even France. His examples all feature a red lettered name made of copper wire. The price guide is in the $200-$250 range for most examples. Alternatively, it is possible that this paperweight is made in the US using techniques originally developed in Europe. Magnum Size: Just under 3 3/4" diameter by 3 1/4" high.

| 2551 | Peter McDougall Miniature Millefiori Paperweight. This
paperweight consists three concentric circles of millefiori around two
central millefiori canes. Although it is not a true concentric, it
gives the appearance of a concentric because the pattern is so regular.
The ground is black. It is signed in the design with a complex cane
made from four separate letter canes forming the signature PMcD (as shown
in the close-up).
This is often called a pressed weight because a mold is used to form the outside ribbing. The top is flattened. The ribbing gives the glass a real glittery appearance as you can see in the picture. The picture does not do justice to this paperweight. Ignore the white areas, they are glare from the lights. Miniature Size: Just over 1 3/4" diameter by 1 1/8" high.

| 2720 | Peter McDougall Miniature Closepack Millefiori Paperweight. This
paperweight consists a close packed design of millefiori canes over a cobalt
blue ground. Peter McDougall's traditional "PMcD" signature cane
appears in the design. In addition, it is signed on the bottom with
a paper label ""PMcD Glass Studio LTD, Hand Made in Crieff Scotland."
A really sparkling little paperweight.
Peter made a similar design at Perthshire Paperweights. It was one of my favorite designs. Originally Perthshire made a simple closepack like this only as a doorknob. In 1997, I asked Peter McDougall if he would make one for me as a paperweight. They liked the result so much that they decided to put it into regular production in two sizes. The picture does not do justice to this paperweight. Ignore the white areas, they are glare from the lights. Miniature Size: Just over 1 3/4" diameter by just over

| 2578 | Peter McDougall Millefiori Pin or Candy Dish with complex canes
on pink lace. Colorful pin dish or candy dish with a spaced complex
millefiori on a pink lace or upset muslin ground. There are seventeen
complex canes, all of which appear to be different. It is signed
in the design with a complex cane made from four separate letter canes
forming the signature PMcD and also has a paper label "PMcD Glass Studio
LTD, Handmade in Crieff Scotland." This is especially nice.
Scottish makers have a history of making candy dishes and other shapes out of paperweights when they realize that the product is flawed in some way. | 1946 | Antique Baccarat Macédoine Millefiori Paperweight.
circa 1845-1860. This paperweight is made up of multi-colored striped
millefiori segments arranged at (mostly) right angles. This is a
antique paperweight made during the classic period of paperweight making
(1845-1860). A wonderful example of this unique style of antique
Baccarat paperweight.
The Macédoine is a uniquely Baccarat style in which the short sections of latticinio (twists, filigree, lace) are arranged in a quilt-like pattern with many of the sections at right angles to each other. Usually there are no millefiori present. This pattern was originally made during the classic period of French paperweights (1845-1860). | 2685 | Antique New England Glass Company Scramble Paperweight with Large
Running Rabbit Cane. c. 1850-70. This is a wonderful antique
New England Glass Company (NEGC) scramble or end of day paperweight.
It has one large running rabbit cane plus a variety of other complex millefiori
and latticinio twist canes.
Although many people collect scramble paperweights for their own merit, scrambles are also valuable tools for learning to identify the different colors and canes used by each factory. New England Glass Company (NEGC) operated in Cambridge, Massachusetts from 1818 to 1888. You can read about paperweights from the New England Glass Company in the book by Hawley, The Art of the Paperweight - The Boston & Sandwich and New England Glass Companies. | 2666 | Large Antique Clichy Chequer Paperweight. c.1845-1860.
The paperweight has 25 colorful complex millefiori canes on a chequer ground
of latticinio twists. The ground is applied in two layers with the
top layer in a chequer pattern and the bottom layer in an unusual radial
pattern. This paperweight was made during the classic period of antique
paperweights (1845-1860). A nice example in excellent condition.
Clichy paperweights are highly sought after by collectors for their complex canes and brilliant colors. Of the three primary French factories (Baccarat, Clichy, and St. Louis), only Clichy made paperweights in the Chequer style with the latticinio twists arranged in a checkerboard pattern. Almost all Clichy paperweights are unsigned. The Clichy factory was founded at Billancourt near Paris in 1837. Shortly after that it moved to Clichy-la-Garenne, which gave the factory its best known name. They stayed in operation until about the 1870s. Large Size: Just over 2 15/16" diameter by 2" high. Bottom is
ground concave.
With antique paperweights, the question always is asked whether or not the paperweight has been restored or polished. The latticinio chequer ground can be felt at the base. This makes me feel that the paperweight has not been reduced in diameter, because otherwise this would have been smoothed over in the process of polishing. Since the dome is free from wear, it is possible that the top of this paperweight may have been polished. $1095 postage paid in the US. | 2641 | Large Faceted Baccarat Limited Edition Fruit Basket Paperweight.
circa 1976. Classical design with a lampwork basket of fruit over
an opaque white milk glass ground. The basket is filled with luscious
strawberries with leaves attached. It is signed with a Baccarat signature
cane "B 1976" and also signed again on the bottom with the Baccarat logo.
The paperweight is faceted with a large convex top facet and six smaller
convex side facets. Perfect execution.
This is a difficult to find older Baccarat paperweight. The design was produced only in 1976 in a limited edition of 300 paperweights. This is number 64 in that series. There is a signature cane B 1976 shown in the pictures. The bottom has the acid etched Baccarat logo plus it is engraved with the year (1976), the number (64) and the size of the series (300). It is unusual to find a Baccarat paperweight with a white opaque ground as they produced very few designs with this choice of ground. It works perfectly as a contrast to the delicate fruit basket. Large Size: 3" diameter by 1 15/16" high. The bottom is
ground flat. Faceted with a large top facet and six side facets.
All the facets are convex.
Baccarat currently suggests a retail price of $3,542 for this paperweight, but my price is much lower. Baccarat started making lampwork paperweights in the early 1970s, following the introduction of modern sulphide paperweights in 1953 and modern millefiori paperweights in 1958. $675 postage paid in the US. Perfect execution and perfect condition.
Baccarat calls the color pink but the actual color is more of an orange - pink. Baccarat started making lampwork paperweights in the early 1970s, following the introduction of modern sulphide paperweights in 1953 and modern millefiori paperweights in 1958. Perthshire Annual Edition 1972C Miniature Flower. This
paperweight features a pink lampwork flower in a stave basket of pink,
blue, and white floret canes. The Perthshire "P" signature cane is
in the center of the flower. This design was Perthshire's first use
of a stave basket in a paperweight. It comes with its original certificate
identifying this as #582 out of a limited edition of 1000.
This was a difficult paperweight to photograph. The pink stave basket in the background makes the pictures look dark, but the actual glass is clear and this little paperweight is a miniature jewel. Perthshire made this paperweight as one of their first annual collection items. This means the design was made only that one year and never again. They made a crown weight as the annual collection item for 1969. In 1970, they made a dragonfly paperweight and a flash overlay millefiori weight. There were four annual collection weights for 1971 and only three annual collection weights for 1972. An identical paperweight sold for $432 in Selman's Spring 2009 Auction. Perthshire PP90 Medium Millefiori Paperweight. circa
1987-1988. This hard to find paperweight consists of a large complex
central cane cluster surrounded by five smaller complex cane clusters over
a dark blue, almost black, ground. It is signed with the Perthshire
"P" in the center. A very showy weight.
Because the PP90 design was made only in 1987 and 1988, it is a relatively difficult design to find. Each cane cluster looks like it could have been made of separate canes, but the standard reference on Perthshire states that these are complex canes. Size: 2 1/2" diameter by just over 1 3/4" high.

| 2617 | Antique St. Louis Concentric Millefiori Paperweight.
circa 1845-1860. This is a medium St. Louis concentric millefiori
paperweight. It is made up of wonderful complex millefiori canes.
The outer ring has complex canes alternating between green and pink.
The inner ring consists of larger blue and white complex canes around a
perfect green, blue, and white central cane. All of this is set over
an upset muslim ground.
If you are wondering how to tell an antique St. Louis concentric from a Baccarat concentric, here is a trick that another collector once taught me. St. Louis weights tend to be bold in the color setup with the outer garland alternating between two colors, while the garland in a comparable Baccarat weight will alternate between a colored cane and white a white cane. Size: 2 1/3" diameter by 1 1/2" high.

1950s -1960s. Wonderful Steuben Teardrop Spiral Paperweight consisting
of an eight rod ribbon of white glass wrapped in a spiral around a central
teardrop shaped bubble. A wonderful example of this design.
This Steuben paperweight is designated model number 8029 and appeared in the Steuben catalog in 1952. It was designed by Steuben senior designer George Thompson in 1937. Thompson received architectural degrees from the University of Nebraska and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Designs by Thompson were included in every Steuben exhibition from 1937 through his retirement in 1974. Steuben Glass was founded in Corning, New York in 1903 by Thomas G. Hawkes, president of T.G. Hawkes and Company, a glass-engraving firm, and by Frederick Carder, an English glassmaker specializing in colorful, art nouveau art glass typical of the period. It was acquired by the Corning Glass Works in 1918. Colored glass was phased out in 1933 and since then Steuben has been known for its very high quality, extremely refractive decorative glass objects. Large Size: 3” diameter by 3 3/8” high.

| 2447 | Perthshire Annual Edition 1971A Overlay Bottle. This is
a faceted bottle with an amethyst flash (translucent) overlay. There
is a four ring concentric millefiori pattern in the bottom of the bottle.
The bottom pattern consists of two outer rings of complex millefiori, two
inner rings of simpler millefiori, and a six pointed star cane in the center.
The stopper has a single complex with a six pointed star in the center.
The bottle has 24 side facets. The stopper has four large facets
and eight smaller facets. The bottle is signed on the bottom with
a complex cane "P 1971". It also comes with its original certificate
identifying this as #252 out of a limited edition of 300.
Perthshire made this bottle as one of their first annual collection items. This means the design was made only that one year and never again. They made a crown weight as the annual collection item for 1969. In 1970, they made a dragonfly paperweight and a flash overlay millefiori weight. There were four annual collection weights for 1971, of which this is designated 1971A. This design was made in a limited edition of 300 bottles, of which 147 were made in amethyst and 153 were made in blue. This is a very hard to find item. An identical bottle sold for $1380 in Selman's Fall 2008 Auction. Size: 4 5/8” tall by 2 ¾” diameter.

Charles and John Degenhart patented this unique automobile accessory on
August 20, 1929. The knob consists of a Degenhart style paperweight

the traditional blue outline. The colorful frit layer is at the same
level as the plaque. This example also has the patent date on the

| 1040 | Erickson Magnum Bubble Design Faceted Paperweight. Circa
1940 - 1960. This large faceted paperweight has perfect execution.
There is a warm ruby pink center, surrounded by a layer of closely spaced
controlled bubbles. The paperweight has unusual faceting with 16
finger facets around the base. All of this creates a magical appearance.
A wonderful paperweight.
As for origin, I have seen this paperweight attributed to several different factories, but I believe that it is by Carl Erickson of Bremen, Ohio. An identical paperweight without the faceting is attributed to Carl Erickson in the book American Glass Paperweights and their Makers by Jean Melvin on page 58. Other sources have attributed this to one of the Degenharts or even to a Murano factory. It is, however, unlike any Degenhart paperweight and also different in construction from any Murano weight I have seen. Carl Erickson came from a line of glass makers and worked at Pairpoint Glass (New Bedford, Massachusetts), Libbey Glass (Toledo, Ohio), and Blenko Glass (Milton, West Virginia) before starting his factory in Bremen, Ohio in 1943. He was born in 1899 and died in 1966. Magnum size: 3 1/2" diameter by just over 2" high. Circa
1940 - 1960. I believe this to be by Carl Erickson.

| 1000 | Perthshire Pin or Candy Dish with Complex Millefiori Pattern. Colorful
pin dish or candy dish with a paperweight pattern in the base. This
is especially nice because it is based on a paperweight with all complex
canes. The ground is a translucent green. The glass of the
rim is clear, the colors you see are a reflection from the green ground
and the canes in the paperweight. This dish has a paper label "PERTHSHIRE
PAPERWEIGHTS CRIEFF SCOTLAND".
Perthshire and other scottish makers have a history of making candy dishes and other shapes out of paperweights when they realize that the product is flawed in some way. I suspect that they also make these dishes to order. Size: Just over 4” diameter by 1 9/16” high. Excellent condition with no scratches, chips or cracks. | 2681 | Correia Art Glass Chanukah Paperweight. This paperweight
has a blue Star of David, Menorah, and Hebrew Chai symbol (meaning "living"
or "for life"). Each symbol appears three times on the paperweight.
The background has a matte finish. The paperweight is made by applying
an overlay of blue glass to a crystal paperweight and then removing the
space between each figure to create the raised symbols. The weight
is signed on the bottom "Correia" and "WE8293 2-00-7".
Correia Art Glass was founded by Steven Correia in 1973. It is located in Santa Monica, California. Currently the company is run by his two children Algerine Correia and Jeffrey Correia. Magnum size: 3 1/16" diameter by 3" high. Signed
"Correia" and "WE8293 2-00-7" on the bottom. Correia registers each
paperweight and I believe the number 8293 is a style and the 2-00-7 is
a series number rather than the year.

| 2662 | Magnum Modern Baccarat Closepack "Church" Millefiori Paperweight.
circa 1969. Large colorful closepack millefiori paperweight with
hundreds of millefiori canes. This paperweight includes the signs
of the zodiac and a date complex date cane (1969). It is signed on
the bottom with Baccarat's acid etch logo. A fantastic weight that
should be in every paperweight collector's collection.
In 1951, a large closepack weight dated 1853 was found in the cornerstone of the parish church in Baccarat during restorations at the church. The church had been damaged during World War II. This rekindled an interest in making millefiori paperweights at Baccarat and the modern production of closepack weights started in 1958. These new paperweights were called Church weights after the newly discovered antique weight. The 1958 version did not have the zodiac canes but it did have a figure 8. However some collectors felt this was good enough to fool all but the expert collector and objected to the close resemblance to antique Baccarat weights. After that Baccarat added the zodiac canes. I don't know if they made these every year, but I have seen the 1958 (signed with a figure 8), 1964 (signed with a special cane to celebrate the Baccarat's 200th Anniversary), 1967 and 1969 plus a few others. Only 26 weights were made in 1964 with the special commemorative signature. When these come up for sale they typically sell for $1,000 or more. There was a 1970 example in Selman's Fall 2007 auction that sold for $1,150. 1958 examples have sold recently for $1,495 and $1,725. You can read more about modern Baccarat paperweights in the book The Art of the Paperweight by Larry Selman. Magnum Size: Just over 3 1/8" diameter by 2 1/8" high. Bottom
is ground flat. It is signed on the bottom with the acid etched Baccarat
logo and is also dated in cane (1969). Most collectors will have
difficulty locating the date cane as it blends well in with the hundreds
of other canes.

| 2525 | Remember the Maine Frit Paperweight. Circa 1900-1940.
This frit paperweight features an image of the 19th Century battleship
USS Maine, which exploded and sank in Havana Harbor (Cuba) in February
1898. The explosion led to the Spanish-American War which began in
April 1898. "Remember the Maine!, To hell with Spain!" became a common
rallying cry. The design is set in white frit over a smaller white
ground made up of small icepick flowers.
Because of the white on white design, this is a difficult paperweight to photograph. There are many bubbles in the frit and in the lower icepick ground. The actual condition is much better than it appears in the pictures. I cannot be sure when or where this paperweight was made. Possibly it was made in Millville, New Jersey in the first half of the 19th century, but many other factories made similar frit style paperweights. Frit refers to the powdered glass used to make the design. The design is set up in a metal die and then picked up with a gather of a ground color. According to Newell's Old Glass Paperweights of Southern New Jersey, frit weights were made as early as 1863. Newell identifies this style as a true folk art. Magnum Size: Just under 3 1/4" diameter by 1 15/16" high.

| 2576 | Very Early Charles Lotton King Tut Paperweight. circa
1972. Abstract surface decorated paperweight with Charles Lotton's
early King Tut design. This is signed "Lotton 1972" in script on
the bottom and has the unfinished pontil mark typical of Lotton's work.
An outstanding example of Lotton's early work with his wonderful iridescent
blue and silver colors.
Charles Lotton began experimenting with paperweight and vase production in a backyard shed in late 1970 in Lynwood, Illinois. At the time he was a successful hair stylist, salon owner, and a collector of glass. From the beginning, he was determined not to reproduce styles made previously. He developed his own formulas for creating glass colors and pioneered the technique of surface decoration. In 1971 he developed the King Tut design shown here. His paperweights are not finished on the bottom and show a rough pontil mark near the script signature. In 1973 he sold his beauty salon and has since worked full time in glass production. Size: 2 5/8" diameter by 2" high. Circa 1972.
The bottom is unfinished with a white pontil scar. It has a script
signature "Lotton 1972".
